We have been very fortunate to have lived on this block of Shattuck between Marin and Los Angeles. Our neighbors tend to know each other, and have been friends (without being nosey or intrusive). When someone leaves town, they inform the near neighbors and we all keep an eye out for anyone who appears suspicious. (We even have neighbors who regularly walk their dogs past our house early in the morning and place our newspaper at our door). There's also an annual street party in the summer, where we close off the block to street traffic.
The people on the block are also safety conscious. We have had Earthquake awareness meetings & drills as well as Berkeley City-provided emergency caches at the homes of 2 different neighbors. A number of neighbors have participated in Berkeley's emergency training & procedures were developed for search and rescue if necessary.
Indian Rock Park is just blocks away. It is a popular attraction for ourselves, visitors, and especially children. As well, one of the famous Berkeley pathways leads from Indian Rock down to Solano Avenue, which has a great diversity of stores and ethnic restaurants. (In early September, Solano Avenue is closed for over a mile for the Solano Stroll, essentially a street fair celebrated by thousands of visitors enjoying the ethnic foods, music, arts and crafts, etc.) Also nearby is Codornices Park with walking trails, picnic areas, a children's playground & across the street from the Park is the beautiful Rose Garden.
Half a mile in the direction of downtown is the Shattuck Avenue "Gourmet Area" & a bit farther is UC Berkeley. Other attractions are in Tilden Park, a short distance up Marin with many miles of hiking trails & children's playground & farm as well as a pond with turtles in season!
The view from the back of the house includes San Francisco Bay and the Oakland-San Francisco and Golden Gate Bridges.
Being able to see the changes in weather coming across the Bay is more timely & fascinating than the media weather reports.
At our altitude the fog layer is infrequent & the moderate temperature, compared to the area over the coastal "mountains" to the East is remarkable, i.e. 20-30 degrees lower. Rarely have we felt a need for air conditioning, and one of the best treats is witnessing the magnificent sunsets.
